TÜV Rheinland develops Certification Roadmap for Hyperloop development
TÜV Rheinland, specialist in international product certification, recently created a ‘Certification Roadmap’ for the Hyperloop Development Program. In Groningen a test and knowledge center for the hyperloop will be realized in a three-year program. TÜV Rheinland has made an overview of standards against which the Hyperloop technology can be tested, so that it can be put into use safely.

The various global Hyperloop initiatives have similar questions in terms of safety, homologation and standards development. The safe introduction of a totally new transport technology requires an in-depth analysis of existing and to be developed standards. In addition, options to achieve formal certification and approval of the system must be explored.
Testing of Hyperloop technology
TÜV Rheinland has outlined an overview of applicable and relevant safety management concepts and standards against which Hyperloop technology can be tested: rail, aviation, electrical engineering, software, hardware. A distinction was made between test purposes and eventual commercial operation.
TÜV Rheinland joined the growing international ecosystem in early 2021 in which more than 20 partners have gathered. The ‘Certification Roadmap’ was developed based on the system definition used by HDP. TÜV Rheinland is involved in several Hyperloop developments worldwide.
According to the company, this has laid an important foundation for the development of the HDP. As HDP is one of the leading parties in the European Hyperloop standardization group (JTC20) and Hardt is active in the European coordination group (Shift2Rail Hyperloop promoters ), TÜV Rheinland and Hardt expect that the approach in this Certification Roadmap will become one of the guiding principles to guide standardization/standard development and safe admission of Hyperloop systems in Europe and beyond.
At the moment, the national or international authority that will ultimately approve the system is still being determined in the European context.
Hyperloop Development Program
Hardt and partners are the driving force behind the Hyperloop Development Program, with support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Change, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Province of Groningen.
